The aim of this translation is to provide the first English translation of Buddenbrooks by a native speaker of English superseding the previous Canadian and American translations. The Introduction sets out the background of the novel, refers to other translations into other languages and TV and film adaptations. This is then followed by the complete English Translation of the text.

Author Information

David Gallagher works as a professional translator of German to English and attended the Thomas Mann Literaturtage conferences in Davos, Switzerland in 2004 and 2006. He is the author of Thomas Mann: Leitmotifs in His Novels and Short Prose Fiction (2011) and has written articles on Thomas Mann for the Literary Encyclopedia.
