Freetown Echoes: Tales from Along the Odokoko by Ahmed Koroma is an autofiction narrative that highlights the everyday rhythms, memories, and communal spirit developed along the Odokoko stream in Freetown, Sierra Leone, between 1970 and 1980. It weaves personal reflection with vivid storytelling to reveal the psychospiritual and sociopolitical life of a community deeply rooted in space and time.
The book begins with an examination of childhood by the creek and the concepts of longing and memory. The interconnected chapters examine a gamut of themes, especially socio-diurnal themes such as library visits, days at school, ceremonies in mosques and churches, and encounters with local folklore. It also highlights poignant episodes: death of a groom on the wedding day; Ken Clark’s daring thefts; the activities of “Elephant,” a street fighter turned actor and grill master; and Bad Kahina’s spiritual interaction with the mermaid spirit of Odokoko. The book also examines Muslim naming conventions and their theological implications, along with other sharply engaging stories.
Running through these stories is the political tension of the era, especially the 1973 and 1977 general elections, portrayed through protests, rivalries, and clashes that ripple through the community. The book concludes with the author’s 1978 visit to Nurse Dougan at the Children’s Hospital: a quiet, intimate moment that captures the tenderness and humanity of Freetown life.
