Anthem Press is fully committed to working with authors, volume editors and contributors to disseminate scholarly work as broadly as possible through our open-access programme. We offer open access for complete books as well as individual chapters depending on the author's preference.
Anthem offers authors and volume editors the option to publish their work with gold open access for a fee to be paid by the authors. With gold open access, your research will be freely available online for others to read, download and share immediately upon publication and without an embargo period. Books are released under the agreed creative commons (CC) licence, and the copyright is assigned to the author. Both your print and open-access publication will benefit from our marketing, distribution and data management services. Please contact your acquisitions editor to know the publication charges for your book.
We also offer our authors and volume editors the option to publish their work with green open access. In this model, the book is published simultaneously as a print and an eBook, and the eBook is released in open access after an embargo period of 18 months. After the embargo period, the digital version of your book will be converted to open access and will be made available through our website, JSTOR, EBSCO, ProQuest, OAPEN and DOAB. The authors will receive a full PDF of the book to self-archive in their university’s repository or personal websites, and they may upload the file to institutional or discipline-based repositories while citing the published version.
Anthem offers the option to publish an individual chapter or chapters as open access content. In this model, the open access chapter(s) will be made freely available through our website, library platforms and distribution channels that can accommodate individual chapters.
Open access titles/chapters are published under a CC licence. This licence allows the online version of the work to be read and downloaded for free; users can copy and share the work ensuring you are credited as the original creator and rights owner. We recommend a CC BY-NC-ND license, which means your work can be copied and shared (with suitable attribution) but cannot be altered or used for commercial purposes. However, depending on your project and your funding requirements, we are flexible on which licence to use. For more information, please Visit the Creative Commons website.
Anthem Press open-access books are made available through our website, JSTOR, EBSCO, ProQuest, OAPEN and DOAB. The web address is deposited in the Crossref DOI repository for citation linking. While the ePDF and XML versions will not be sold through institutional library channels, a print version will be available for sale to individual readers who prefer to own a physical copy of the book. In addition, authors will receive a full PDF of the book to self-archive in their university’s repository or personal websites, and they may upload the file to institutional or discipline-based repositories while citing the published version.
We partner with Knowledge Unlatched (KU) every year to make a number of Anthem titles open access. KU asks for nominations in specific subject areas and invites libraries around the world to pledge their support to individual titles through crowdfunding. Titles with enough support are made open access. Our partnership with KU ensures that more Anthem titles are open access, at no cost to the author, either immediately upon publication or after a stipulated period.
Please inform your editor if you would like your title to be nominated for KU funding. They will be able to submit it in case KU asks for nominations in your subject area. For more information on KU subject areas, please visit the KU website.
Anthem Press open-access titles go through the same editorial and production attention as our regular manuscripts. All titles are subject to peer review and receive editorial, production and marketing support.
All of our books, including our open-access titles, are assigned a subject marketing expert who will be in touch with you at the appropriate time (usually 6–9 months before publication). All of our open-access titles receive the same marketing plan and activities as non–open access books.
