Anthem Studies in Death and Literature

We live in an age where life expectancies have gone up, where the practice of extending life is not uncommon and where a ’flu pandemic crashed the global economy and changed the way we behave. In this age, death studies, inaugurated in the second half of the twentieth century, thrive and have flourished especially in the social sciences and in history. However, serious attention in literary studies has only recently turned to the benefits of a death studies approach. The Anthem Studies in Death and Literature series offers a home for these contributions. Whether the exploration of a particular author’s depiction of the motifs of death dying, or explorations of a particular figuration of death and dying in literature—such as murder, suicide, illness, and grief—the Studies in Death and Literature series offers a capacious space for thanatological research in literature. Covering any literature in English, the Anthem Studies in Death and Literature series offers a space for transhistorical research and brings together studies that focus attention on the future that faces us all.

In this series, the editors consider ‘literature’ generously to include adjacent media such as film and television. Alongside literary-critical interventions, the editors also welcome contributions in the form of creative-critical writing and narrative nonfiction.
