Performing Religions

The series Performing Religions focuses on the theatrical, oral-performative and entertainment value of religious traditions across space and time. It unpacks the “cultural” aspect that is enmeshed in shaping faiths as practices including art, theatre, dance and music. This perspective starts from anthropological, sociological, historical and art-historical premises, furthering recent research trends that have moved away from theologically dogmatic and essentialist ideas about what religions were or should be. “Performing Religions” intersects with “lived religion” approaches but includes formal as well as informal religious practices and behaviours by considering ritual and liturgy in a broad sense. Framing research on the arts within religious discourse, this series aims to be an open and interreligious forum for the study of oral-performative traditions in their multiform manifestations.
