This series is intended to provide a general survey of how individual academic disciplines emerged and developed within universities in the modern era. The very limited literature on the history of academic disciplines is almost always limited to the portrayal of the development of a specific academic discipline within one country. And studies of institutions offer little with regards to the development of academic disciplines. This series will provide handbook volumes that will survey how academic disciplines such as history, anthropology, archaeology, sociology and so on emerged as autonomous academic units. These handbooks will include chapters on the institutionalisation of these fields, the development of subfields, the emergence of important theories, portrayals of important thinkers/scholars, important projects, and major trends in research and teaching. The handbooks are expected to have a transnational perspective in that they do not focus on just one country, but on the development of that specific field within academia.

Potential volumes: History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Sociology, Ethnography, Political Science, Psychology, Criminology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
