Series Description Anthem Studies in Encounters between Peripheral Regions publishes studies on encounters and interactions between peripheral regions of the world system, with a particular focus on East-Central and Southeast Europe, as well as East and Southeast Asia, during the colonial period. While there is a substantial body of scholarship on Western European encounters with the non-European world over the past few centuries—a period when European imperialism was the dominant force in world history—recent years have seen a growing interest in studying intercivilizational encounters from a different perspective—by focusing on actors from peripheral regions. Entanglements between different civilisations can be better understood by analysing the activities of actors who did not originate from traditional empires or their colonies but rather from areas that were seemingly uninvolved in European expansion.
